Rules

GO FOR THE GREEN RULES

The following are league and local rules for our golf league. Anything not covered here under golf rules will be governed by the overall rules of the U.S.G.A., under the most current rules available. Any interpretation of a specific rule or dispute during play must be protested at the time and at the place of the the dispute and recorded on the official scorecard as disputed and will be resolved by the rules committee, which is Louis Oosthuizen,  Charl Schwartzel, and Dustin Johnson for 2011.
Rules Interpretations/Clarifications
2005- NEW*NEW*NEW*NEW*NEW*NEW*

1)    SUBS – You are still responsible for getting subs in your absence.  This year, We are allowing drop ins to fill in each week and those drop-ins will count.  It is luck of the draw if you don’t get a sub though and whether you are assigned a sub.  The assignments will be assigned by tee time, so drop ins will be sent out with the earlier groups if regulars are missing.  Note:  Notify your partner NOT GORDY OR ANDY if you are running late for some odd reason–if you don’t, we may send a drop in out in your absence, and then you are shut out playing that week.

2)    NO-SHOWS – Any match played with either a non-qualified sub (i.e. one with no established league average) or a no-show will now be played directly against the missing opponent’s average ONLY. (This eliminates the “average plus 2 and average plus 4 rules-struck out below)  After the matches are scored, the team with missing players will be penalized points as follows:  Team match = 4 points for one player missing and 8 points two players missing.  Individual points match loss = 8 points.   Example:  Team match 14-8 (minus 4)=  14-4.

The purpose of this rule change is to only penalize missing teams and not reward teams that play against them.  It will also ultimately reward those who show up and play like they should or get subs each week.

Equitable Stroke Control – (2001)  Go For the Green uses Equitable Stroke Control (ESC) for posting your “ESC score” for league handicap purposes. Essentially, any blowup holes are adjusted to your handicap (i.e. a 10 to an 8, an 8 to a 7, etc…) depending on your existing 18 hole league handicap. This is only to determine handicap and fill in the “ESC Score” number on your GFTG scorecard, NOT TO SCORE YOUR MATCH.

Below is the handicap ranges with the maximum score listed just to the right (i.e if your 18 hole league handicap is 22, the most you can take on a hole is an 8):
Course Handicap Maximum Number
9 or less Double Bogey
10-19 7
20-29 8
30-39 9
40 and above 10

New Construction Zones (2002)– You notice that new construction of homes is being done all around Tanglewood, but most prevalent on the North and West Courses. Where marked with a RED or WHITE painted boundary, stake or line, those areas will be considered out of bounds (typically painted on the cart paths) and must be played by the normal one stroke penalty rules on the line of flight. If not marked with red or white, the ball, if found, may be either played from its location in the dirt or removed on the line of flight back towards the tee and played on without penalty.
Point of clarification regarding balls hit against course boundaries (2002)
Must play ball as it lies or improve/fluff ball with no influence on next shot (i.e. improve your backswing if it impeded, etc…). Taking relief of any kind results in a penalty (one stroke).
Course boundaries exist at the following points in addition to the white staked areas.
#5 North Course – fence on left side of hole with farm behind
#6 South Course – Fence to obstruct homes to the left of the tee box
North and West Courses – Ten Mile Road
South Course – parking lot #9
West Course – Tanglewood drive #8, #9
Anything not covered here under golf rules will be governed by the overall rules of the U.S.G.A., under the most current rules available. Any interpretation of a specific rule or dispute during play must be protested at the time and at the place of the the dispute and recorded on the official scorecard as disputed and will be resolved by the rules committee.
Scoring System – Any player who picks up their ball without the opponent conceding that player the hole automatically 1) loses the hole for match purposes (both individual and team), 2) forfeits 4 points for totals (individual and team), and 3) records the score as if the shot was conceded for handicap purposes ( i.e. if I pick my own ball voluntarily after 6 shots were played, I would record a 7 and record the match as described above.
Keep in mind if a sub is playing, you must make him aware of the rules. It is your responsibility as a league player.

A. League Fees: Green Fees, Outing Moneys, & Prize Moneys

1. League Fee for 2011 is $627, and breaks down as follows:
Tanglewood $28 X 18 = $504 (note- this is a prepaid rate, so payment is due prior to league season)
Outing $ 85
Web Site cost = $2
Free Practice Round 0
Greenies $2 x 18 = $36
TOTAL: $627
Payments are due as follows:
First Week of Golf

2. Prize Money
Prize Moneys are derived 100% from the collection of sub fees, which are of course undetermined at the outset of the season. Many times absences are known well in advance. You should plan accordingly. You are being given a sub list, which players are highlighted who have played as a sub recently. Sub moneys are divided as follows:
50% To Your Outing (multiple prizes)
17% Individual Champion (s)
33% Team Champion (s)
Sub Fees are $25 this year. Please get subs. It makes our league more competitive and helps fund the Outing.

B. Tee Times
4:32 , 4:40, 4:48, 4:56, 5:04, each Wednesday. You must tee off at your scheduled time-No exceptions. If you tee off late, you automatically lose any holes you miss (team & individual) and play each hole average plus 2 for the match (normal 5=7).

C. Rainouts
Call Tanglewood to determine whether the course IS OPEN (248) 486-3355. Ask only for Brad Stedry. Do not judge whether golf is on or off based on what is out your window, as experience tells us we play most of the time. When in doubt, call the course. All rainouts will be added at the end of the season. Your scheduled tee times will remain the same all year, unless a position night is moved, and you are given a revised schedule.

D. League Format
The league starts officially on April 28 and continues until EIGHTEEN LEAGUE WEEKS ARE PLAYED, each Wednesday. Two competitions (team and individual) will be contested each week and throughout the year as follows:

Team Competition

The league will have twelve two man teams that will participate in competition. Each team competes each week for 22 total points, 2 points for each hole plus 4 points based on team totals each week. Handicaps will be determined and adjusted each week of competition based on the handicap rules set out below. The team competition plays two seasons during the year, and the end of each half the league plays a position night to determine the 1st half and second half season champion. 1st half champ then plays 2nd half champ at the end of the year for the overall team championship. The league then is scheduled as follows:
Week 1 – Practice Round
Week 2-8 First Half
Week 9 Position Night #1
Week 10-16 Second Half
Week 17 Position Night #2
Week 18 Team Championship (1 v. 2)
Week 19 Individual Championship (Gophers v. Greenie champ)

Individual Championship

Two divisions are established at random the opening night of golf with one member of each team designated for each division (Gophers & Greenies). Within each foursome each week, the Gophers face off and the Greenies face off in an individual match. Each individual match is scored on the same 22 point system as described above in the team competition, with 2 points for each hole and 4 points for totals each week. Individual competition continues all season long, as opposed to two halves. Gopher Champ plays Greenie Champ last week of golf (Week 19 also becomes a fun night for the rest of the league).

Year 2005 – 2004 League average

E. Handicap System

1) Last year’s handicap if established will be used ten times (10) to ensure continuity of play. Each week 1/10th of your last year average will be dropped and your actual score will be used to replace. Example:
Beginning of year: 45-45-45-45-45-45-45-45-45-45
Week One 48-45-45-45-45-45-45-45-45-45
Week Two 42-48-45-45-45-45-45-45-45-45 and so on…
2) New Players – We will use the first two actual scores played to determine new league players handicap (including practice round). Subs will use sub handicap x 10.
3) Scoring Limits – For handicap purposes, all individual hole scores over ten will be recorded as 10 for handicap purposes. For match purposes, you must complete the hole and record the raw score on your card.
For nine hole handicap purposes, all scores over sixty (60) will be recorded as 60. For match purposes, do not stop counting at sixty .

F. Missing Players

1) When a Player is unable to play, you are solely responsible for finding a sub. An initial sub list is being provided and is on the Web Site. You are also encouraged to add new subs to the list and updates will be published as necessary.
2) Handicap – It takes two rounds of play for a sub to establish a sub average. The second time a sub plays, his score will be used on the card and scored against his two week handicap (i.e. first week 49, second week 51, then 51 used against 50 average).
Note the below Average Plus Four and Average Plus Two Rules have been eliminated as of 2005 and replaced with the No-Sub Scoring rules:
3)    SUBS – (2005) You are still responsible for getting subs in your absence.
4)    NO-SHOWS – (2005) Any match played with either a non-qualified sub (i.e. one with no established league average) or a no-show will now be played directly against the missing opponent’s average ONLY.

It will also ultimately reward those who show up and play like they should or get subs each week
3) If your opponent does not have a sub, the card is scored by adding four (4) strokes to the missing player’s established handicap with the strokes being assessed on the four most difficult holes (by course ranking). The missing player also loses totals automatically for his individual match only (“Average Plus Four Rule”)
4) If a sub does play but is playing for the first time (i.e. no sub handicap from immediate prior year), the card is determined by adding two strokes (2) to the missing opponent’s handicap, with the strokes being assessed on the two most difficult holes (by course ranking) (“Average Plus Two Rule”)
5) ONLY subs with established handicaps (two weeks of play) will be allowed to play on position night or championship nights.
1.    Sub Fees are $23 to be paid before golf (GREENIES EXTRA)

G. Out of Bounds, Unplayable Lies & Lost Balls

1) Erley/Crawford Rule – When a ball is hit out of bounds (white stakes) there will be a one stroke penalty assessed with the “Line of Flight” used to determine where the player’s ball is dropped. It is important to note that in no instance will a player be allowed to drop his ball closer to the hole in relation to the line of flight where the ball last went out of bounds. This rule is specifically being added so that players do not gain yardage on the 7th North, 3rd South holes at Tanglewood.
To assure speed of play, a provisional ball may be played at the player’s discretion at the line of flight/point of entry if there is uncertainty about the location of his ball.
The Line of Flight Rule will also apply to unplayable lies in a hazard and lost balls with a one stroke penalty being assessed. In no case may a player take more than two minutes in a hazard looking for his ball.
Point of clarification – Course boundaries exist at the following points in addition to the white staked areas:
#5 North Course – fence on left side of hole with farm behind. Must play ball as it lies or improve/fluff ball with no influence on next shot (i.e. improve your backswing if it impeded, etc…)
#6

H. Winter Rules

This league will play under Winter Rules all season long, which allow a player to improve his lie by moving the ball no more than six inches from its landing position, no closer to the hole nor giving the player a better or clearer shot to the green, particularly from behind a natural obstruction. (The best example of this is if your your balls rests directly behind a tree trunk, you may move your ball back six inches, but not to the right or left of the tree to get a clean shot to the green). You will be able to move the ball in both the fairway and rough but you cannot move or touch the ball in a sand trap, marked off hazard (red stakes), and you cannot move the ball from the rough to the fairway.

I. Rules Committee

A three man rules committee was established last year to develop these initial rules The 2001 rules committee will serve the league as a sounding board during the year for rules interpretations. Any requests for rules interpretations must be made immediately after the round of play 2001 Members:
Erley, Hans, Wohlart

J. Outing Chairman – TBD

If a conflict prevents your attendance at our outing, you may find a replacement. If you provide a replacement name to the outing chairman up to four weeks before the outing, you will be entitled to your sub fee’s outing money. After we are within four weeks to the outing date, the league will offer spots first to league subs by number of weeks played, then to the general public, under which the league will collect a sub fee and use it for additional prize money for the league and outing.
